Just what is Pilates?
Body Control Pilates is based on the work of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) who created a series of exercises that built strength without adding bulk, and balanced the strength with flexibility.
Practiced across the globe by elite athletes and beginners alike, Pilates is exercise with a difference, as it combines body conditioning as well as stretching and relaxation.
Exercises are built around 8 basic core principles: concentration, relation, alignment, breathing, centring, co-ordination, stamina and free flowing movement.
Pilates doesn’t just develop core abdominal strength and improve your posture, when practiced regularly it works the legs, bottoms and upper body. People who regularly practice Pilates note significant improvements in their posture and describe more restful sleep patterns and discover they can much better cope with stress. They also report improvements in their overall strength and flexibility. It is for these reasons that Pilates can benefit people of all ages and levels of fitness.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body, with a sound mind, fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure”
Joseph Pilates, 1883 – 1967
